It was Lyndon Johnson who tied U.S. and Israeli fates together, as I understand it, in response to Robert F. Kennedy's campaign pledge. (Both were Democrats. Due to antiwar sentiment, LBJ, who had massively escalated the Vietnam War, chose not to seek reelection.)

An awful lot of deaths, including with the 9/11 attacks and the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, can be attributed at least in part to failed U.S.-Israeli settler-colonial policy. When we focus on the Israeli deaths in the Hamas attack, we neglect an awful lot of suffering. It's a horrendously skewed and skewing view.
