Jews have a magnificent social justice tradition that, as a country, they have not upheld even within their own society, let alone in the Occupied Territories. I have learned a bit from this tradition. I value that learning.

Part of what I take from that learning is that justice is an end that can never be achieved--the moment you think you have reached it, it slips from your grasp--but must never be abandoned. Zionists do not merely abandon that end. They repudiate it.

I cannot forgive the dissonance between Israel's formation in the wake of the Holocaust and its ethnic cleansing and genocide of Palestinians. The latter eviscerates any moral legitimacy the country had.

But even more fundamentally, Israel embodies an imperialist but nonsensical notion that safety can be achieved by making other people less safe.
