Trying to get back in the habit of writing quick "weekly notes" posts.

This one somehow lead to me writing briefly about (or maybe ?), a notion that's been on my mind ever since I started to see how strongly GLAM practices are biased toward mistaking counting for meaning.

I'd love to get people's feedback on which term makes more sense to them! ryanpatrickrandall.com/weekly-

@ryanrandall the notion of “information humanities” has captured my imagination…

i agree that critical theory and practice must be central in it as a — hrm, discipline? tend to prefer shorter names (and hashtags because i usually need the characters), but given how many pixels have been dedicated to “what is digital humanities?” and how few to “how do we do digital humanities ethically?” probably needs that critical appellation.
thank goodness mastodon has a longer character count.

@librarifran I'm so glad that the idea sounds interesting to you! And your points about what has / hasn't been emphasized with DH is a very good one.

I'm probably more primed than most to see humanities as involving critique / critical theory / critical thinking about power, since those lines of thinking were core component of my undergrad at UCRiverside. I'm always finding myself relearning that it's not that way in all English / Media Studies / etc programs.

Maybe "Critical Information Humanities" is a better term! It could maybe be part of a broader "Critical Information Studies"?

@ryanrandall mpow is in the process of building out a school of computer and data sciences. they’re piecing together what they’re calling a cultural analytics track and connecting with the dh minor. i could see a track aligned with what i’m reading into your description.

@librarifran That sounds exciting! And I like that variant of a potential hashtag, too.
