Sehr lohnender Austausch! 🙂

En route to the DAAD's conference to present on and @projektshrimp. If I'm not mistaken, this is Shrimpy's first time traveling with Deutsche Bahn. Crustacean on a train... what a time to be alive! :)

current Twitter critique of Fediverse

Mastodon's "niceness" may *sound* like a good thing? Until you realize it could allow some people to evade the cleansing fire of our algorithmically-mediated moral drama.

Mastodon tips (brief)

1. Server choice - tricky
2. Add a pic and bio
3. I prefer 'Advanced web interface'
4. And the 'Light' theme
5. Listen to long-time users
6. Tip your server admins
7. Hashtags pretty important
8. Put Alt text on pics
9. Use Content Warning if in doubt
10. Pin introduction post
11. Do some boosting
12. Follow interesting people
13. Hashtags can be followed too
14. DMs not secure
15. Be respectful
16. Thank you, people who run this

Dear scholars on Mastodon:

can a bunch of you write major studies on how the use/misuse/nouse of CW reveals deep underlying views on nearly every major issue facing us today?

Mastodon’s little glitches get more palatable every time I open Twitter & it’s just a little crappier

I must admit I’m impressed- in a sad way- by all the Twitter boldface names posting away with the same schtick as ever, with the same five jokes- as if the whole enterprise isn’t falling to pieces around them.

Chat - I run a Mattermost instance that provides chat for my research lab, my fellowship program, and it is the software that has been the most useful for me. Mattermost is easy to setup and manage, and has given me very little grief over the last few years. Mattermost is spectacular and is100% what people should be looking at if they want to get away from Slack (which people should be doing). mattermost.org/

10 hours and we've passed 100 #DigitalHumanities people. 🙏🏻 tinyurl.com/dhmastodon.

There's plenty of room for anyone else who'd like to add themself to the list: forms.gle/veW8vPv6Fi6sYYTV9

As one of the main Mastodon developers, I can't promise you that Mastodon will be a complete and exact Twitter replacement for you, but it may fit your use-cases, at least it does for me.

Just keep in mind that it is not exactly the same thing, some core design decisions are different (there isn't an unique centrally-governed website, but many interconnected servers operated by different individuals and organizations) and thus the tradeoffs can be different as well.

While I personally don't think Mastodon should aim at being an exact replacement to Twitter, I do hope Mastodon can be useful to more people wanting an alternative to Twitter! And I know there are lots of room for improvement, on things we do know, and on things we don't.

Also keep in mind that Mastodon is developed by only two core developers payed through a non-profit funded through sponsorship, grants and donations, so please be patient!

Hi new folks! Looking for #DigitalHumanities people on Mastodon? We've got 264 here: tinyurl.com/dhmastodon. Link at the top for adding yourself; DM me (@quinnanya) if you've moved servers & need to update your entry.

When following back people here, I’m noticing a lot of people haven’t posted anything yet.

If you can’t think of anything to write just yet, then do consider just reblogging (=retweeting!) good content that you see around. You could start with this post, for example, to encourage more people to start sharing content around here.

BTW, as we get the Bylines publications going on here, that will provide ample good news content for the community. 👍👍

Hello everyone, my name is Sebastian Herrmann. I'm an American studies scholar based at Leipzig, Germany.

I recently completed a book-length project on the "data imaginary" in nineteenth-century US culture. I used to work on "unreality in the US presidency" before everybody started talking about 'post-truth' :p My book on "Presidential Unrealities" came out in 2014... Right now, and thanks to generous funding by the VolkswagenStiftung, I work on the "post-narrative" qualities of right wing populism (and on an elearning project called SHRIMP_PODS).

I'm (obviously) new to Mastodon and curious to see what things are like over here.
