History of Art
Academy by Lamplight (1769) by English painter Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797). In Wright’s day, the contemplation of art was regarded as a civilizing act, softening rough manners and unruly appetites and making the beholder a more virtuous person. Wright contrasts the refining influence of the nymph with the Borghese Gladiator statue in the background, which represents rough and aggressive masculinity.

https://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/academy-by-lamplight-1769-joseph-wright-of-derby.html

#art #ArtHistory

Laura G, Sassy 70’s
Your art history post for today: Bust of Queen Nefertiti, 18th dynasty, ca. 1370–1333 BC, height: 19 inches (48 cm), painted stucco and limestone, Egyptian Museum and Papyrus Collection, Neues Museum, Berlin, Germany. #arthistory

From Time Magazine: ‘The bust is of Nefertiti, queen of Egypt and wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten, who reigned in the 14th century B.C. A hundred years after Nefertiti’s bust was lifted out of the ground at Amarna, some 480 km south of Cairo, it remains one of the most iconic figures of Egyptian antiquity, far smaller than the pyramids or the Sphinx, but no less globally resonant. The bust adorns souvenir schlock throughout Egypt and history schoolbooks worldwide. When it went on display at a museum in Berlin in the 1920s, it was almost immediately held up as a symbol of universal, timeless beauty. That’s not surprising. Nefertiti’s name means “the beautiful one has come.”’ — “The Bust of Nefertiti: Remembering Ancient Egypt’s Famous Queen,” by Ishaan Tharoor, Time Magazine, December 06, 2012.
