There was a piece of good reporting about school safety on @NPR Morning Edition today.
What I don't hear in the piece, and don't see enough in person, is the common sense approach that maintaining physical safety is priority one.
This does NOT mean suspending and expelling students. It may mean possession searches for a student who was found to have brought in a weapon, until the adults who are in charge of keeping the school safe feel that there is no longer a reasonable concern.
It also means that students who for example, are caught bringing a weapon in, are going to be having lots of conversations and getting a lot of attention.
Students and teachers who have been hurt or threatened also must be closely attended to.
