Lá Fhéile Bríde sona daoibh! Happy St Brigit's Day, feast day of one of Ireland's patron saints and the traditional first day of spring in Ireland. I have a special grá (affection) for Brigit as a #medieval historical figure and because as a child I was taught by the Brigidine Sisters.
Brigit's was widely venerated across medieval Europe—there was apparently an altar dedicated to her as far east as Kyiv. She was especially respected as a worker of dairy- and livestock-related miracles. This 13th-century gilded reliquary from Plappeville in e. France is said to hold a relic of hers.
But the core of her popularity was always of course Ireland, and in particular in Kildare, the site of her famous abbey.
